About us: Bedford Players is a community theatre in Bedford, Nova Scotia. Bedford Players has been producing quality theatre for over 40 years and currently produces 3 productions per season with 11 performances each.
Overview: The Technical Director at Bedford Players is responsible for the full technical operations of Bedford Players Theatre, including all aspects of theatre and production lighting, sound, and equipment maintenance. At Bedford Players Theatre, this role does not include oversight of set design and/or construction.

This is an unpaid, volunteer position in a dynamic and welcoming community theatre.

Responsibilities:
  • Collaborates with the Artistic Director and Production Manager, and Play (Production) Director to realize the vision for each production.
  • Recruits for each production a Sound Lead and a Lighting Lead.
  • Orients the Sound and Lighting Leads to safety, technical characteristics, and other areas of facility operations.
  • Ensures all technical volunteers, including Leads, are aware of the theatre’s Code of Conduct, Harassment Prevention Policy, and safety protocols.
  • Attends production meetings and rehearsals as necessary.
  • Advises and collaborates with production managers, production directors, Lighting and Sound Leads on the technical needs and specifications required for performances at the theatre venue well in advance of production dates.
  • Oversees and, as needed, assists Lighting and Sound leads with the implementation of technical requirements.
  • Supports the Lighting and Sound Leads in the coordination, identification, and as needed, training of technical crew and operators.
  • Manages and maintains the theatre’s technical equipment and inventory, ensuring operational safety and efficiency, and performing minor repairs and preventative maintenance as needed.
  • Oversees budgetary compliance for technical expenses.
  • Liaises with external vendors and rental companies.
  • Maintains an organized technical workspace.
  • As a member of the Bedford Players Executive Council (EC), attends monthly online meetings and regularly reports to the EC.
Time Commitment: A general estimate of time commitment is approximately 30-35 hours spread over the course of the production, from planning stages to the close of the show run.
Candidate requirements:

 

The ideal candidate possesses both creative vision and practical skills.

  • Practical Technical Skills: Possesses a working technical knowledge of lighting and sound equipment and operation. Is comfortable operating and performing basic repairs to theatre’s sound board, lights and lighting console.
  • Volunteer Mentorship: Patiently guides and mentors Lighting and Sound Leads.
  • Resourcefulness: Creatively problem-solves within limited resource constraints.
  • Collaboration: Possesses strong communication skills to liaise with Leads, Production Managers, Play Directors, and EC members.
  • Safety Enforcement: Ensures a safe working environment through strict enforcement of safe tool usage, ladder safety, equipment handling.
  • Physical Capability: Able to safely lift and move technical equipment, climb ladders, and work at heights.
  • Schedule Flexibility: Able to volunteer some evenings and weekends.
