Job title: Technical Director for Community Theatre

About us: Bedford Players is a community theatre in Bedford, Nova Scotia. Bedford Players has been producing quality theatre for over 40 years and currently produces 3 productions per season with 11 performances each.
Overview: The Technical Director at Bedford Players will provide consistency and continuity within their area of responsibility and will oversee the technical aspects of our community theatre’s productions, including lighting, sound, and special effects. This role, in this theatre, does not include oversight of set design and/or construction. The ideal candidate should have a passion for theatre and a hands-on approach to problem-solving. This role requires both creative vision and practical skills.
Responsibilities:
  • Evaluate potential scripts for technical feasibility.
  • Collaborate with the Artistic Director and production teams to realize each show’s vision.
  • Manage and maintain technical equipment and inventory, ensuring operational safety and efficiency.
  • Oversee budgetary compliance for technical expenses.
  • Participate in the strike process, securing lights, sound, and special effects
    materials/equipment.
  • Maintain an organized technical workspace.
  • Attend production meetings and rehearsals as necessary
  • Select the Lighting & Sound leads for each production, in consultation with the Production Manager
  • Support the Light/Sound lead or leads, assist with coordination and identification of technical crew and operators
  • Liaise with external vendors and rental companies.
  • Regularly reports to the Bedford Players Executive Council
Time Commitment: A general estimate of time commitment is approximately 30-35 hours spread over the course of the production, from planning stages to the close of the show run.
Candidate requirements:

 

  • Flexibility to volunteer on evenings and weekends
  • Experience with accounting for a community organization/not-for-profit is beneficial
  • The ideal candidate should have a passion for theatre and a hands-on approach to problem-solving. This role requires both creative vision and practical skills.
Technical Details: Space – Bedford Players performs in a church hall with seating for 136.

Equipment:

  • Lights – All LED fixtures, ETC Nomad control
  • Sound – QLab 5
  • MacOS used for both systems
Other: NOTE: The Technical Director, in the context of Bedford Players, is responsible for lights and sound only.

Transition – the current Technical Director is happy to answer questions and provide support to the incoming TD for a smooth transition.
